Volendam and Marken
Saturday, April 15, 2023
A day in Volendam with a ferry ride to Marken and self-guided noodling. At the end of the day make the move to Boutique Hotel Zaan.
The travel schedule to the Boutique Hotel Zaan leaves a little over an hour to visit the Zaan Museum after check in at the Boutique Hotel Zaan.
Trip to Volendam Wharf
9:15 am – Take bus 316 from Katwoude, Hotel Volendam to Julianaweg-Centrum bus stop
9:22 am – Walk to Marken Ferry dock
Walk northeast on Julianaweg to Edammerweg
Southeast (right) on Edammerweg to Meerzijde
Northeast (left) on Meerzijde to Brugstraat
Southeast (Right) on Brugstraat to Haven
Northeast (left) on Haven. The ferry will be on your right
9:40 am - Use your Iamsterdam City Cards for your round trip ticket to the ferry.
9:45 am – Take Ferry to Marken
10:00 am – Plan to noodle about an hour around the wharf area.
11:00 am – Take the ferry back to Volendam.
Let the noodling begin.
When leaving the ferry you step onto Haven street. There are noodling opportunities in both directions. I would walk at least as far and the Foto Experience Volendam in the soutwest direction and the V.O.F. Jonk Souveniers | Klaas Jonk Dutch Costumes in the northeast direction.
Heading right (northeast) from the ferry.
Heading left (southwest) from the ferry.
The cheese museum to the right (northeast) on Haven and it's free. There is cheese tasting and a cheese store.
There are a number of restaurants serving lunch on Haven in either direction when you get off the ferry.
Restaurant De Lunch is one of them. It's a 100 yards or so to the left when you get off the ferry.
The sailing ship should be near the ferry dock. The view above shows the ferry on the right and the ship on the left. Might be a good photo op.
You might want to walk out on the outer dike of the harbor for a photo. You can walk out to the entrance to the harbor from either side of the harbor.
Experience Volendam is about 250 m down Haven along the wharf.
The museum is open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Iamsterdam City Card provides free admission.
2:39 pm - Take EBS bus 316 to Amsterdam Central Station then walk to platform 7A
3:13 pm – Take Sprinter train 4046 to Zaandijk, Zaanse Schans train station
3:43 pm – Walk to the Boutique Hotel Zaan
3:30 pm - Walk to Boutique Hotel Zaan - Lagedijk 32, 1544 BG Zaandijk, Netherlands.
From train station use walkway under the road and tracks east to Stationstraat
Continue east to Hoogstraat.
Turn left on Hoogstraat (which morphs into Lagedijk) and walk north to Guisweg (aka Julianabrug)
The hotel will be across the highway on the northeast corner of the intersection.
Diversion for Chocolate – “Smells Like Chocolate”
Just before finishing your walk from the Zaanse Schans train station to the hotel, you’ll see “Smell Like Chocolate”.
It's on Lagedijk just before getting to the windmill that's across the highway from the hotel.
The hours are Wednesday- Monday (Closed on Tuesday) - 10:30 am - 17:30 pm.
So would a nice hot cup of hot chocolate with a cookie go good about now?
From the Boutique Hotel Zaan, go east across the river to the traffic circle. Turn north and the Zaan Museum is on the right.
The Iamsterdam City Card gives you free admission to the museum.
